چکیده

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are stable towards oxidation, hydrolysis and other chemical reactions which conceivably occur in the environment. Although there is little direct evidence available, it is generally assumed that PCBs, particularly those with a high chlorine content, are also quite resistant to metabolic change. Over the past years photochemical degradation was shown to be a possible major route of environmental breakdown for a number of pesticides (1-4). Until relatively recently (5), however, simple chloroarornatic compounds have not received much attention. The limited interest of photochemists in compounds of this type can perhaps be explained by the commonly held view that there is generally little cleavage of the C-Cl bond in chloroaromatic compounds (6). We have previously shown (7) that 2,2',4,4', 6,6'-hexachlorobiphenyl, when irradiated at 3100 i in hexane, photolyzes rather readily to give products which are formed by loss of chlorine, rearrangement and condensation. We now wish to present a first report of our studies on the photochemical stability of a number of chlorobiphenyl isomers in hexane as well as on the breakdown of chlorobiphenyls under natural and simulated "natural conditions", with particular emphasis on polar products. Considerable experience in laboratory irradiations of pesticides has accumulated (1, 3, 8) and an elaborate "weathering chamber", which also allows controlled irradiation, has been described

Background and Objective: Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are toxic, persistent, bio-accumulate and pose a risk of causing adverse effects on human health and to the environment. PCB compounds exert varios impacts on human depending upon age, route of entry, intensity and frequency of exposure. This study was conducted to determine the effect of UV-C, hydrogen peroxide and solvent on the photo...

The Comparative Photodegradation Activities of Pentachlorophenol (PCP) and Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) Using UV Alone and TiO2-Derived Photocatalysts in Methanol Soil Washing Solution

Photochemical treatment is increasingly being applied to remedy environmental problems. TiO2-derived catalysts are efficiently and widely used in photodegradation applications. The efficiency of various photochemical treatments, namely, the use of UV irradiation without catalyst or with TiO2/graphene-TiO2 photodegradation methods was determined by comparing the photodegadation of two main types...

Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) have been widely used to flame-retard products common in homes and theworkplace, and subsequently. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) typify a class of highly toxic, stable aromaticpollutants. PCBs are recently being scrutinized for potential environment damage in groundwater and in theatmosphere. The elimination of chemical pollutants from a contaminated environm...

An overview on PCBs in the environment, their health effects, identifying and removal methodsl methods

Introduction: PCBs are chemical resistant and biodegradable compounds which can have harmful effects on human health and the environment. These compounds are used in thermal, hydraulic, lubricating, pesticides, cosmetics, paint and paint products, adhesives, plastics, carbonless paper and electrical industries such as capacitors, transformer oils, disconnectors and fluorescent lamps. In the pre...

Biodegradation of Polychlorinated Biphenyls by and Isolated from Contaminated Soil

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) cause many significant ecological problems because of their low degradability, high harmfulness, and solid bioaccumulation. Two bacterial strains were isolated from soil that had been polluted with electrical transformer liquid for more than 40 years. The isolates were distinguished as Lysinibacillus macrolides DSM54Tand Bacillus firmus NBRC1530...
